TIMELINE & STATUS
Bitcoin wallets are a little different than traditional wallets, they follow the principle of self-custody, meaning users are responsible for securely storing their own recovery phrases (keys) which are the only way to access their wallet and no intermediary is involved. However, the current backup UX is often rushed and confusing, leading to critical mistakes that can result in permanent loss of keys. This project reimagine the recovery phrase backup process by creating a user-friendly flow that incorporates educational tooltips, multiple verification methods, and deliberate UX friction to ensure users understand the importance of their recovery phrase and back it up with 100% accuracy.
A Bitcoin recovery phrase is the ultimate master key to a user's funds, yet current wallet designs often rush users through this vital step without adequate education, leading to catastrophic mistakes like permanently lost phrases or compromised digital backups. Beginners frequently experience anxiety, confusion, and decision fatigue due to complex jargon and a lack of clear guidance, resulting in poor security practices such as taking screenshots or saving phrases in cloud storage. This project was initiated to eliminate that onboarding friction, replacing fear and confusion with a relaxed, educated, and confidence-building user experience that inherently discourages risky behavior while ensuring users reach absolute backup accuracy
Executed through a structured, user-centric design process that seamlessly integrated UX psychology, rigorous security constraints, and innovative feature development. The workflow began with competitive analysis and persona mapping to identify current friction points, which led to the creation of an optimized user flow that incorporates contextual educational tooltips and deliberate UX friction, such as preventing clipboard copying and screen-recording. To balance Hick’s Law with accessibility, the verification phase was designed to offer multiple user-controlled paths—including a secure, device-earpiece-only voice recognition method and the mathematically mapped "Seed Sky" constellation generator—all synthesized into a polished, interactive Figma prototype that addresses edge cases, brute-force protections, and cognitive load balancing.
